Boston is certainly making headlines when it comes to how
affordable, convenient and down right fun and enjoyable it is to
travel around this beautiful city and its surroundings. The cycling
industry has taken off with the increasingly popular Hubway starting its bike
sharing program only just last summer. Furthermore, of March
15th 2012 the revolutionary firm brought their bicycles back to the
city and reopened for business
after being closed for the winter months. These transformations to
the way in which Bostonians and visitors alike weave in and out of
the Hub by cycling caught the attention of NBC News who ranked
Boston as #2 nationwide for cycling.
It was not long ago in 2007 when there were only sixty yards of
official bicycle lanes within the city limits. Now, largely due to
the efforts of Mayor Thomas M. Meninos Boston Bikes Initiative,
there are over fifty miles (52.2 miles to be exact) of bicycle
lanes all throughout the area. This indeed is something that Hubway
was highly aware of as this year they have announced their plans to
expand to areas of Cambridge,
Somerville,
Brookline
and Boston Proper. Currently there are over 850 bike racks holding
2,500 cycles involved in the Hubway program and allow individuals
to enjoy a unique, Green and healthy way to explore the city be it
for commuting to work or strictly for pleasure.
Even though the city of Austin ranked as the number one city
across the country for cyclists, it was not long ago in February of
2012 when Boston was ranked as the best city for both
walking and cycling combined according to the 2012 Benchmark
Report. During times when transportation options are expensive or
parking is at a shortage, choosing alternative means that even
improve ones health like cycling is something that we should all
consider. Due to these accolades, it undoubtedly is a proud time to
be living in The Greater Boston Area!
