Gibson Gives Back: The Whitaker Group

The
Whitaker Group
has long supported the Homeless Prevention
Council and will once again serve as co-chairs for the 6th
annual
 Walk for Home—helping deliver
life-changing assistance to those who need it most on Cape
Cod
.
Jen Whitaker
and
Amanda Marie DeOliveira
 play a crucial role in
rallying community support and find that it’s the people that
keep them invested
year after year.

What is the Homeless Prevention Council and how did you
both get involved?

The Homeless Prevention Council (HPC) empowers people by
providing the tools, resources, and guidance to promote stability
through personalized solutions. Case Managers work with clients to
find practical solutions. Their goal is to help motivate clients to
take step-by-step actions and take advantage of HPC programs to
help them succeed and ultimately stabilize their
lives.

What is the
Walk for Home, event and what are your roles?

We are the co-chairs for the Walk for Home in Provincetown on
June 8th. We are responsible for getting the word out to the
community by contacting our past team captains and corporate
sponsors and providing local businesses with posters and flyers. We
also organized the day’s logistics by recruiting the volunteers
that made the big event happen. Simultaneously there will be a walk
taking place on Main Street in Chatham. Both walks benefit the HPC
and are two miles round trip.

When is the Walk for Home and how can people
help?

The walk starts at 10 am at both locations on the 8th of June.
The public can sign up to walk via the link here. It is $30 to
walk. Participants can walk individually or form a team to raise
additional money through donations. All donations are welcome!

You’ve championed the Gibson Sotheby’s
International Walking Team every year. What about it keeps you
returning?

Volunteering for a cause we care about is a fulfilling
experience, especially as it allows us to connect with others
who share the same passion.

Do you have any stand-out memories from this event or
successes from years past?

Our stand-out memories always include the kids from
Provincetown. They make posters, raise money, and love to pose for
pictures. At a young age, they are very aware of housing insecurity
on the Cape.

As busy real estate professionals, how do you stay
engaged in philanthropy? Why is giving back a
priority?

As busy real estate professionals, staying engaged in
philanthropy is not only important to us, it’s also personal.
Housing insecurity is a significant problem on the Cape for
year-round families and is something we have seen firsthand in our
line of work. Supporting organizations that work to prevent
homelessness and provide housing assistance is one way we make a
difference in the lives of those struggling. Giving back is a way
to show that we care and are invested in our community.

Do you have any recommendations for those considering a
deeper dive into philanthropy?

Start with something small, and offer to help at an event. Talk
to other people who volunteer and ask if you can tag along. The
friendships you make along the way will keep you going back!
