Facts about Maui

Soaring just more than 10,000 feet tall, Haleakala is the
largest dormant volcano in the world. The crater alone could
swallow the island of Manhattan, and is 21 miles across and 4,000
feet deep.
The summit of Haleakala is usually about 32 degrees cooler than
Mauis beaches because on average, temperatures drop 3.2 degrees for
every 1,000 feet.
Hawaiian is one of the official languages of the state of
Hawaii, along with English.
Maui has been voted Best Island in the World at least 16 times
by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine.
Lahaina used to be Hawaiis capital until 1850. The capital is
now Honolulu.
The famed Road to Hana has 600 hairpin turns and 54 bridges,
even though its only 45 miles long.
Whale season spans from mid-November to early-April, when
between 12,000 to 14,000 travel from the North Pacific ocean to
breed, birth and nurse calves in Hawaii.
Although Lahaina and Kaanapali generally receive less than 10
inches of rain each year, a lush area in the West Maui Mountains
called Puu Kukui receives more than 360 inches each year.
Maui has more than 80 beaches in total with more miles of
accessible beach than other Hawaiian Islands. Throughout the
island, there are 30 miles of white, red and black sand
beaches.
During the winter, the ocean temperature is around 75 degrees,
while the air hovers between 65 to 80 degrees.
During the summer, ocean temperatures are usually around 79 to
80 degrees, while the air falls between 70 to 87 degrees depending
on where you live.
Maui is called the Valley Isle because Mount Haleakala and the
West Maui Mountains create a vast valley that is central part of
the island.
Each island in Hawaii has an official flower and color. Mauis
color is pink, and the flower is the Lokelani, also known as the
Damask Rose.
Lahainas historic banyan tree is one of the largest in the
world, which spans over nearly an acre of land. The famous tree was
only 8 feet tall when it was planted in 1873, but is now the center
of Lahaina town and hosts dozens of craft fairs and festivals.
On Maui, all beaches are public. No one has the right to
establish exclusive resorts or keep people off beaches.
Hawaii bans billboards, which means Mauis breathtaking
landscape is unobstructed even on highways.
Lahainaluna High School is the oldest school west of the Rocky
Mountains, and was home to the first printing press in the western
part of the country.
The Haleakala High Altitude Observatory is celebrated as one of
the best astronomical surveillance sites in the world.
Maui is the second-largest Hawaiian island.
Maui is about 48 miles long, 26 miles wide and 728 square
miles.
