University located on Somerset Street
Boston, while being a hub for many leading industries,
certainly is one for higher education. Suffolk University, whose
campus is located right in the Hub itself, is a brilliant
institution that only looks to continue to add to its facilities
and opportunities available to its students with this latest news.
The general contractors known as Suffolk Construction are set to
manage the building of a $49 Million academic complex for Suffolk
University to be located on Somerset Street.
Encompassing a massive 110,000 square feet and
10-storys, this building near Government Center will replace the
old Metropolitan District Commission. Within the building Suffolk
will house faculty offices, a gorgeous 200-seating dining hall, an
art gallery for students, and first-rate classroom facilities.
The existing building was purchased by the University
back in 2006 for $8 Million, when at the time University officials
envisioned a brand new 22-story dormitory to be constructed at the
address. However, the Beacon Hill
neighborhood denied the project so it was back to the drawing
board for Suffolk, although what an impressive tower they now have
planned that the University can look forward to.
Suffolk Construction will be tasked with overseeing the
demolition of the existing Metropolitan District Commission
building in the near future. Furthermore, it must be noted that
there are several historic elements of the current building that
the contractors are going to salvage and use in the new facility.
Finally, Roemer Plaza will also be redeveloped and will commemorate
the Metropolitan District Commissions history. Indeed exciting
times are ahead for current and future Suffolk University students
and Boston as a whole as yet another wonderful addition to the city
skyline is soon to get underway.
