Not too long ago there were plans to redevelop Westwood Station
to an astronomical scale. These plans never came to fruition,
however new plans indeed have come about for this 130-acre location
at the junction of Route 128 and Interstate 95. Just on Tuesday the
23rd of October, members from the Finance and Warrant Commission,
the Westwood Board of Selectmen and the Planning Board all met to
discuss the possibilities of this future venture.
To be known as University Station, this project will have
roughly 850,000 square feet dedicated to housing and hotel rooms,
750,000 square feet for retail spaces and also 500,000 square feet
of office space to cover its total of 2.1 million square feet
facility. Dougass E. Karp, a Senior Vice President of New England
Development and a partner in the development mentions, This project
is less than half the size of the last project. There is a retail
center to be built, and housing and apartments to be built, as soon
as we get approval. Of the aforementioned housing units, they will
all be in one and two bedroom configurations with 100 out of the
750 total to be dedicated solely to the elderly. Of this housing
availability, there will be some that will be condominiums with 15%
of them to be made as affordable housing.
The other groups in the development team are National
Development, Clarion Partners, Charles River Realty Investors and
Eastern Development. The teaming up of these dedicated groups of
professionals has injected a great deal of optimism about these
plans amongst the public and that of Westwood in
particular. Karp even went on to state, We have been Working
diligently with the Planning Board to come up with a plan that the
town likes and that is good from a development perspective. We are
kind of excited about that. He concluded by informing us that the
boards will continue to get together on a weekly basis from now
until Christmas to iron out some of the other major details
regarding the development and that progress is surely being
made.
