Art Rio, a splendid event fair that will compile some of the
most dazzling displays of contemporary art, will take place from
September 12th until the 16th of 2012 in the beautifully striking
city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This is all a part of the Sothebys
brand broader initiative to expand its presence, especially now in
Brazil. There clearly is no slowing down the Sotheby’s brand. With
our blog about the
Sothebys Auction House selling The Scream for a record amount for a
painting of close to $120 Million to the next blog about
Sotheby’s jewels at auction selling for almost $112 Million,
exciting news is seemingly on the rise.
Now for Brazil, Sotheby’s S2, known for being the brands global
contemporary art gallery, has a permanent home in the Sothebys
Auction House headquarters located in New York, and will be
participating at Art Rio. The newly constructed S2 Gallery in
Brazil was designed by Richard Gluckman, an architect who also
hosts various shows that have a specific artistic focus on the
contemporary.
Furthermore, a new office also opened just last year in So Paulo
and there has been not only an increase in the amount of collectors
in Brazil, but a heightened interest in contemporary art causing
Sothebys to send more art for client events in the country than
ever before. At the upcoming Art Rio fair, some of the more notable
artists work that will be featured are the likes of Andy Warhol,
Alexander Calder, Lucio Fontana, Richard Prince, and Anish Kapoor,
along with more recent contemporary artists; Rudolf Stingel, Vik
Muniz, and Ugo Rondinone. In addition, one piece to look out for
will be Richard Princes 2009 Painting (Untitled) Cabo After Dark,
which will be one of many tantalizing items for the many
prospective buyers in attendance.
One stipulation with art in Brazil is that for imported pieces,
there has been the issue of high import taxes being applied.
However, Sothebys representatives have reached an agreement that
will exempt those purchasing clients from the heavy Rio de Janeiro
state ICMS tax during the time of the event.
So why Brazil in particular as a new hub for artistic
enthusiasts? A country whose economy is certainly on the rise,
Brazil also was recently the place that was honored with holding
the most popular art show in the world, as experts agreed. This
notable occasion was the showcasing of Dutchman M.C. Escher’s
graphic art works in Rio de Janeiro and has truly invigorated the
artistic reputation in the country for the foreseeable future.
