‘The best island in the world’. What would you guess it could
be? Hawaii, Bermuda, Santorini, the Azores? All of these would be
wrong. Well, that is to the highly acclaimed recent book from The
National Geographic entitled, “The 10 Best of Everything”. So, the
top ten islands then; sure many hailed from the most distant of
lands and the most tropical of climates, however the number one
ranking turned out to be none other than our own Massachusetts
island of Nantucket!
Travel writer Leslie Thomas was the one primarily responsible
for putting together such a list and it is something we should all
be immensely proud about. Thomas had this to say about this newly
crowned island, Nantucket was once one of the richest places in
America, built on the profits of the whale oil industry. Even today
in the delectable old town there are fine brick houses with silver
mailboxes. Old-time sailors used to call Nantucket The Little Grey
Lady of the Sea. On the misty morning I first arrived there, I
could understand why. A woman was riding a horse along the beach to
the utter delight of her family aboard my ferry, and she bore a
banner that said Crazy Aunt Rides Again. It is a unique place.”
This, as well with other nearby vacation/home destinations were
mentioned in Gibson Sothebys International Realtys newly
constructed Vacationing in New
England page on our website. Here you can discover much that
there is to do and realize that Boston is truly at the epicenter
for an array of nearby activities and attractions for friends,
couples and families.
Recently, we also reported in a blog
how there is a staggeringly impressive home for sale in Nantucket
that would be the most expensive home ever to sell on the island
even if it does not trade for near the $59 Million asking price.
Nantucket is evidently an exquisite place as a vacation
destination, retiree spot or as a full-time place to be lucky
enough to call home. For more on Nantucket and how we at Gibson
Sothebys International Realty can best assist you in your search
regardless of the location, please never hesitate to contact
